Rematch (86%)A multiplayer football game from a developer known for martial arts games, Rematch’s love for the game is “infectious” enough that even non-fans might get into it, Justin said in his review. However, the breakout hit in the indie scene is undoubtedly Balatro, the roguelike poker game many players could not put down. After initially releasing on PC and consoles, Balatro is now also available on mobile, which is where I’ve been playing this twisted little roguelike.
GT7 is also a stunning showcase of PS5 tech, making arguably the best use of the DualSense Wireless Controller’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. You’ll feel every bump in the road, every screech around a corner, and every gear change as you maneuver around GT7’s litany of tracks. Pair this with lightning-quick load times and you end up with a beautifully seamless racing experience in GT7.
Yet, ultimately, the story’s conclusion falls short in terms of both impact and a thoroughly satisfying resolution. Review Score: 8 (“great”)
This isn’t a story beat that slowly gets revealed over time as the alters realize why they were created, but a head-on breach of the topic. The game wants you to understand that the alters are more than just your labor force, they’re people with experiences and memories – even if they’re simulated. Jan Technician decided to stand up to his abusive father, whereas Jan Prime left for university and never looked back. There’s tension between the two men upon realizing this, and it quickly becomes apparent how someone so close to you can also simultaneously feel so far away. These alters may share the same DNA as Jan, but similarities essentially end there. Props to 11 Bit’s visual design team and to Jan’s actor Alex Jordan for making each Jan distinguished but also still Jan-like.
I happen to like Euro-Jank story presentation so I like how it’s told. But some who are more used to how Japanese and American developers present their stories might find it more obtuse than it needs to be. As for the Euro Jank gameplay… Stalker taught me a long time ago how to put up with it. Although I admit it’s the one game I own on Switch 2 where I just can’t comfortably use it in pure handheld mode. Compare that to how feature rich something like Fantasy Life I is. It’s got its share of jank—and you can ignore the silly microtransactions—but more than makes up for it with its phenomenal combat system, goofy NPC companions, and slapstick goblin fights. And if you’re looking for an all-star cast, PlayStation released the game with the biggest names in Astro Bot a brilliant platformer that matches the quality of anything its rivals at Nintendo put ou,t. There are hundreds of collectible characters from across PlayStation’s biggest franchises to discover, making it quite literally a game chock-full of big names. That certainly doesn’t mean 2024 was a worse year for gaming – far from it. But one thing that is apparent is that they were spaced out, unlike last year when the hits just seemed to keep on coming.
The Alters is a sci-fi base building sim set on a distant planet where you need to create alternate versions of yourself to survive. On the surface, it may seem like a retelling of a classic sci-fi cloning story, but in reality, this copy couldn’t be more different. Hitman World of Assassination – Signature Edition is a stunning collection of games that sees Agent 47 at his absolute best. With multiplayer aspects woven seamlessly and smartly into the mix, tons of ways to approach every mission, and some of the best level design in the biz, this is a bonafide belter, no questions asked. After making fans wait three years for a second season, Squid Game is already back for its third and final installment just six months later, and the first reviews say it’s a worthy conclusion. Gaming forums offer a wealth of information about video game ratings.
You’ll research and eventually craft a means to minimize these threats, but their presence gives exploring a thrilling edge. With various bits of gadgetry, you need to find the right location (often signified by environmental clues), then scan the surface to find an ore vein, plonk your mining machine down and then place enough tethers back the way you came to link it back to the ship. Finding a mining spot always feels like a journey, as you have to navigate the planet’s surface, climbing up to ledges and blasting rocks to create pathways. It’s a dramatic and gripping start to the game, and it’s a high that never lapses. The Alters is more story-focused than 11 Bit’s previous work, but the fight for survival is just as fierce. Original Jan, and all the other Jans, feel the supercharged, life-and-death stakes of their precarious predicament.
So that the infant girl might have a chance to live, he ends his life in the final contest, “Sky Squid Game,” so that the baby is declared the winner. A testament to Jung-jae’s outstanding performance throughout the series, viewers see a man who has navigated the full spectrum of emotions and managed to hold onto his humanity despite his circumstances. Despondent about the failed rebellion and emotionally tormented by all that he’s experienced, Gi-hun is inconsolable. Unfortunately, false leads and nefarious characters initially prevent him from finding any real evidence. PPT2S and SXSG are lots of fun, though I wish the AI were less sensitive (i.e. aggressive) whenever I play Tetris/Puyo Puyo well (even with auto difficulty disabled). Few to no complaints about SXSG, barring the usual trial-and-error that comes with navigating levels at high speed. Make sure you rank the games you’ve played to improve the ranking. @BaldB3lper78 I’m enjoying the hell out of BotW on the new switch.
While the bones of Balatro will be familiar to anyone with a cursory knowledge of poker, the ingenious modifiers and ways players can hit higher scores makes the lizard brain light up in delight and deserves all the praise it’s received this year. 2024 was another banner year for video games thanks to a slate of big releases, strong remakes, and surprising hits. But despite plenty of games that made a splash, IGN awarded only one new game a perfect score of 10, and some argue that it’s not even a ‘proper’ game. Rob is the Managing Editor of TechRadar Gaming, a video games journalist, critic, editor, and writer, and has years of experience gained from multiple publications. Original Jan asks his alters the same set of control questions each time they emerge from the Womb, moving through clockwork beats of dismay and outrage as the new arrivals grapple with the baffling nature of their existence. Indeed, as the hours accrue, the conversations naturally take on a kind of eerie, echoey feel, such is the way that Jan is, in essence, talking to himself. The result is a kind of maddeningly claustrophobic nightmare — and perhaps not wholly in the way 11 Bit necessarily intended.
You can assign them tasks – mining, cooking, base maintenance – whatever you need, they’ll do it. This labor pool isn’t something you create instantly, but slowly over time. You can assign the alters different tasks seamlessly in the game’s job menu, and when they’re done with their production line, they’ll ask you if you want them to hop onto something else. It’s a landscape of dramatic rock formations, caverns, and canyons, but this is no time to take holiday snaps. The planet is home to strange anomalies, translucent floating globules of nasty radiation that will eat through your suit, and the planet is prone to hours of intense radioactivity.
